Ayurveda has well researched recommendations for the maintenance and improvement of general health. Nutrition happens to be an important part of the Ayurvedic approach. It talks about three basic pillars of life and “Ahara” or nutrition is the first and of prime importance among them. Ayurveda considers that nutrition is not only limited to food, but it also comprises environmental, psychological and other factors.
As per Ayurveda, everything in the universe is made up of five elements, namely, air, space, fire, water and earth. These five elements further combine to form three basic Bio–Energies (present in our body in different proportions). These three Bio–Energies are:
These bio energies are present in our body in varying proportions and that is the reason as to why we rarely find any two persons alike, in all respect, in this world. Likewise, the diet we take is again a mix of these bio energies. Any imbalance in the proportion of Vata, Pitta and Kapha in the body due to wrong eating habits and bad lifestyle can lead to a disease. Therefore, it’s important to know that eating right means eating according to one’s body composition or the “Bio-Energies”.
Management of “Bio-Energies” involve harmonizing intake of diet as per one’s body type. Eight important rules are involved in the intake of a proper diet. These are called “Ashta Ahara Vidhi Visesayatana” (Eight Factors of Diet and Dietetics). All these eight factors are complementary to each other and denote wholesomeness of diet. These “Ashta Ahara Vidhi Visesayatana” are:
These factors give rise to good as well as bad effects and at the same time are helpful to one another. It is essential to know these factors in order to intake the right diet.
